I have been asked this question many a times by our readers, is registry cleaner really helpful? The simple answer to this question is Yes! However, many of you techie folks may not agree unless I provide some facts and figures. Of course, that is what I’m going to do. I will provide facts and figures and will share some interesting information about how registry cleaner works, read on.

Definition

Registry cleaner is a software component designed specifically for Microsoft Windows Operating System to remove redundant or unwanted items from the Windows registry. Registry cleaners keep your Windows registry clean by removing configuration data from the Windows Registry that is no longer in use or that is unwanted on the system.

Overview

Reg Clean is actually a freeware utility from Microsoft that helps to repair a number of registry problems that are somewhat common to Microsoft products. While RegClean isn’t nearly as thorough or useful as some proprietary solutions such as RegistryEasy Registry Cleaner, it does serve the needs of millions of low-risk users.

Why use a registry cleaner?

Although there may be no need of using a registry cleaner too often like we use an antivirus or antispyware, however, there may be a need of using a registry cleaner every few months or so. We install programs and software on our computers often. When we install software components and programs, they write special keys and/or strings in the registry. These keys & strings are important for software to run properly on your computer. Whenever we do not find the need of a software, we remove it using the uninstaller that comes along with software. Many a times, programs and software do not include an uninstaller. Many a times, people tend to remove software by deleting files manually instead of using the uninstaller. This results into leaving a lot of unwanted keys & strings in the registry. Apart from that, whenever your computer gets infected with a virus or a spyware, the virus/spyware creates special registry keys to spread infection on your computer. Viruses and spyware are designed to add unwanted keys/strings to the windows registry which makes it difficult to get rid of viruses and spyware. Your antivirus may be smart enough to quarantine or remove the infected files, however, it may not remove those special registry keys. This could allow the virus or spyware to get activated in near future. Then again, your antivirus or spyware has to remove infected files. This usually results into removing too many files that your system may become unstable. So, there is a need of using a good effective registry cleaner.

What does a registry cleaner do?

Registry cleaners

This is actually an interesting question to ask and very few people are really aware of what a registry cleaner or a registry mechanic can do. Most computer users will say that a registry cleaner can clean the registry, which is partially true. However, with an advanced registry cleaner like the RegistryEasy Registry Cleaner software, you can get rid of problematic and obsolete registry entries created by software and drivers that you either uninstalled or deleted incorrectly in the past. Windows registry is a formation of thousands of keys, values and strings. These keys, values and strings are extremely important to run software and hardware on your computer as they direct software packages to use different services to work as desired. Registry cleaner ensures that none of the un-used or improperly installed keys, values or strings exist in your registry. It eliminates all the keys, values and strings installed by problematic software like spyware, virus, adware, trojans, malware and more. Advanced registry cleaners like the RegistryEasy work one step ahead by blocking such unwanted keys, values and strings, in the first place.

You can either use the FREE windows registry software by Microsoft or you can use the PC Tools registry mechanic. Both are good to keep the registry clean. PC Tools is better but it is not free.
Just my 2 cents.

The windows registry cleaner by Microsoft is CRAP! I have used it and it can’t even remove unwanted keys from the registry Run and Runonce folders correctly.
I recommend PC Tools registry mechanic. It is not free but if you want an easier life, buy it.

I still don’t get it why use a registry cleaner, I have never needed it. May be I dont download crap off the internet. Specially those glowing stupid screen savers. Thats why I have never got a problem.

Hi Rose,
You really don’t need a registry cleaner unless you start finding problems with software on your computer. If you are looking for solutions to make your PC fast or clean the rests of the programs you uninstalled long before, then you may need a good registry cleaner. Apart from that, it is a good practice to use a registry cleaner regularly. Registry cleaners are designed to remove all the junk that gets collected in the registry over the time. Also, if your PC was ever infected with a virus or a spyware and your antivirus removed infected files, chances are that the spyware rests or left-overs may still exist as entries in your registry. Thats when you need the best registry cleaner to clear off all the dead spyware or virus codes from your registry.
Hope this info helps understanding why you need a registry cleaner.
