What is Windows Registry

In general terms, Windows registry is a part of the Microsoft Windows operating system that stores all the configuration settings for all the hardware and software components installed on your computer. Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that stores configuration settings and options on Microsoft Windows operating systems. Read the Wikipedia article on Windows registry to find out more information about how it works. It is not recommended to manually edit the registry but make it a thumb rule to backup your Windows registry before trying anything because it is the backbone of Windows operating system. Most good registry cleaners have the capability to backup a copy of the registry before cleaning it.
What is a Registry Cleaner
The term “registry cleaner” comes from the Microsoft Windows operating system registry. Windows registry is the most important part of the windows operating system, which stores all the information about hardware and software components on your computer system. To better understand the definition and concept of a registry cleaner, you could refer to the Wikipedia article on registry cleaners. The article provides detailed information about definition, purpose, advantages, disadvantages and more. One thing to remember, while there are extremely good registry cleaners, there also exist some free registry cleaners that are instead bad for your computer. You should be extremely cautious while downloading anything from the internet. This review is to highlight the best registry cleaners that are safe for your computer.
How a Registry Cleaner works
Registry cleaner removes configuration data or unwanted items from the Windows registry that is no longer in use. A registry cleaner scans the registry, and attempts to pick out the unnecessary values in order to delete or repair them. The functioning is just like your antivirus software when it scans your computer and removes any infected files. A good registry cleaner is designed to scan registry items and find traces of only the bad/useless items, either repair them or completely remove them in order to protect your Windows registry from any sort of damage. Some of the good characteristics of a good registry cleaner software are offering backup and restore functions that allow the user to revert changes made by the registry cleaner in case they are undesired. The main function of a registry cleaner is to automate the process of looking for invalid entries, missing file references or broken links within the registry and resolving them.
Why use a registry cleaner
This is an excellent question and the answer is simple. If you love maintenance and understand the importance of maintenance, you will love using a registry cleaner. Computer users install various components from time-to-time to enhance a computer and make it more usable. Whenever we install a new software or hardware component, it registers its keys in the Windows registry which is important for the functionality of hardware/software to work as desired. Over the time, we install or uninstall/remove some software/hardware as we no longer need it. Sometimes the keys in the registry are not removed when we uninstall components from the computer. This leaves dead keys that are good for nothing. Also, when a computer is infected with a virus, spyware or malware and we use a good antivirus software to remove the malware, it may leave active/dead keys in the registry. These keys should be removed in order to fully protect your computer from malware, specially the entries created by spyware. Spyware is designed to spy on your computer and open ports on your computer to invite more spyware from the internet, so it is very important to remove a spyware completely from your computer. That is when a registry cleaner is extremely helpful. It removes all the redundant or unwanted items from your registry and cleans it free from any spyware/virus keys. A good registry cleaner is needed to fix registry errors and optimize your PC.
Do I really need a registry cleaner
No you don’t, if you don’t install anything on your computer. If you don’t install any software or any new hardware on your computer and never uninstall anything you have previously installed, you may not need it. However, the chances are that 99.99% people do install something or the other over the time. The whole idea of using computers is to make your life easier, you can’t simply stop using your computer in order to keep your computer safe from malware. The key, is to stay cautious of your activities while using your computer, do not install anything without knowing what you are installing and definitely not without making sure that you are installing something “trusted”. Let’s not get into a lengthy discussion about what you should do with your computer, you are smart and knowledgeable, the idea is to stay safe and maintain Registry hygiene while being very choosy with what you install. Secondly, you may need a registry cleaner if you are experiencing any of these situations:
- Computer running slow
- Sluggish performance
- Frequent errors or pop-ups
- Errors at computer startup
- System crashing or stalling
- Blue screens of death
- Malware or scareware indications

Oh I have Errorfix installed on my computer and I remember, the first time I scanned my computer with it, I was amazed to find so many useless crap in the registry. My computer was running slow and it really helped tuning my computer.
That seems like the best top ten registry cleaners list. I have a question:
How frequently should you use a registry cleaner?
Hi Laura,
I’m happy to know that you found this article helpful.
I run registry cleaner once every couple of weeks and I believe, that’s how we should use it unless there is some specific problem like computer running slow or some spyware/malware/scareware on your computer. Hope that answers your question.

REGISTRY WINNER is the best registry cleaner!
Wow, I always thought that ErrorFix was the best registry cleaner. But may be the first two are good too. I purchased errorfix when my computer was infected with a super spyware. I believe, registry cleaners are as important as antivirus or internet security.
Thanks ..
I have been thinking of installing a good registry cleaner. Is there any free registry cleaner that is recommended?
Hi Kylie,
There are a few free registry cleaners that may offer some value, however, I have never put my faith in free software. It is recommended to go with a good registry cleaner. The Regeasy, Registry winner and Errorfix registry cleaners are well known. You could install any one of these and enjoy safe computing.

We have around 100 computers at our office and we are thinking of using registry cleaner on all computers. Can we just purchase one registry cleaner and install it on all computers? Or is there some business license available? We need an enterprise level registry cleaner for our business computers, please provide help.
Regards,
Walter Fisherman.
Hi Walter,
Although all of these top 10 registry cleaners are really good, however, I suggest you to go with either of the top 3. Once you visit the registry cleaner site, please look for the contact information to contact customer service. I suggest you to contact them to find out information about an enterprise registry cleaner.
All the best.
Excellent review of top 10 registry cleaners.
Oh well, Windows Registry is a VERY sensitive component of Windows operating system. Although there are many geeks who love tweaking registry manually, however, it takes only 1 mistake and you are on your own with problems that may end up in operating system reinstall. Hope you know what you are doing Joe. But I have never ever recommended anyone to play with registry. I have warned, don’t hold me accountable if anything goes wrong. DO NOT PLAY WITH WINDOWS REGISTRY, BE CAREFUL!
Very good registry cleaner reviews, thanks.
Regtool registry cleaner is the best out of all.
I think Registry Genius is also a good registry cleaner. Good reviews
thanks.
Thanks very good review. Good regestry cleaners.
Registry Toolkit registry cleaner is wonderful. Fast, easy and safe.
Thanks, good review, I will sphinn it for you.
Hmmm good list of registry cleaners. I never thought I would need one but my computer is running very slow and I guess, it is about time that I should have one on my computer too. I think Registry Winner is good because I read about it on other blogs/forums and it is trust worthy.
ok, good list. I should say, it is to the point. Good information, good reviews. Thanks for being informative.
These registry cleaners are good but be careful about some of the fake registry cleaners. Few months ago I clicked on a banner on a website. The freagin software infected my computer. I downloaded it because it was advertised that it is a good registry cleaner. DONT just click on banners, this list seems to be legitimate. I will install the Regeasy and let you know how is it.
Hi Ashley, I’m a computer troubleshooter and have been fixing computers since over 8 years. I see every need of installing and using a registry cleaner because there are a hell lot of virus/spyware on the internet. It is better to be safe than sorry, so a good antivirus, antispyware, firewall and registry cleaner is a must on every computer.
argh, I should have installed a registry cleaner before this spyware crap ruined my life. I had some spyware on my computer months ago. I installed the Norton Internet Security suite and thought that it took care of the spyware. But one day someone hacked my site, they had the FTP details of my website. The logs show that they used my FTP details and removed all the content from my site. What a lame thing to do but I learnt my lesson. Now I have all sorts of security on my computer. I’m using the RegEASY registry cleaner, it is very powerful.
I agree with you Ashley, I would never trust a freeware registry cleaner for more than one reason. Why would anyone give a registry cleaner for free? Think ..
What do you think about the free Microsoft registry cleaner software? I have heard that it is good, what’s your take on it?
@Paulson Group:
What do you think about Microsoft Windows? I believe, all Microsoft products suck. And I’m pretty sure, their registry cleaner software sucks too. Sorry for the bad words but I have nothing good to say about Microsoft. As much as I am pissed off with their software Win Vista, I can’t have a positive thought about any of their products.
Hi Paulson Group,
I don’t think that Microsoft registry cleaner qualifies for this top ten registry cleaners review. I’m not out of those who trust free software, even if it is from Microsoft. I’m not sure if Microsoft registry cleaner is free. If it is, question yourself, why are they giving it for free?
Windows registry is a sensitive component of your operating system. Whatever you do, be cautious and be careful.
good registry cleaner review, i found this review extremely helpful. thanks.
Very good review, good points included. Never thought there were so many registry cleaners. I knew about Registry Easy and Registry winner but never heard of the other software. Excellent top 10 registry cleaners 2010 list.

I found this one Registry Cleaner 7 from Madcrosoft UK (Google IT)
It has a lot of cool tools, and best of all its only £4.99 for the full product.
I think this needs to be reviewed and added to the list.

Okay, I installed Registry Easy and it worked, serial was accepted too and I cleaned the registries.

Is this a false positive or is it a virus? I am worried now. :(
Hey Rahul,
The question is, where did you download the RegistryEasy from? If you downloaded it from the regeasycleaner.com website, then I believe it is a false positive. But if you downloaded the software from some other website, you should be worried.
Many people encounter the following computer problems: take a long time to start up, load websites or run programs. Recently I find functional software which can fix all these problems just with one click: tuneup360, maybe you guys could have a try.
If your computer is getting somewhat sluggish, you might think yu have no choice but to upgrade to a new one. STOP! Read on. True, the latest software tends to be more resource intensive than ever, but this does not mean that a 3 year old computer is obsolete. One reason so many computers become sluggish is because of all of the spyware, adware, and malware, they accumulate. And that is in addition to the unnecessary programs that keep hogging your computer’s resources.
